The first game of the 2017 IndiWorld Championships saw the first international team in the event’s history 3WYA Canada On Da Rise take down the hometown San Diego Slayers by a score of 63-52. On Da Rise was able to get out to an early 25-9 lead in the first quarter and while the Slayers were able to cut the deficit to three by the end of the first half, On Da Rise was still able to pull out the victory.
Kyree Thompson led all scorers with 23 points and was clearly the leader for On Da Rise, helping the team keep their composure after blowing their early lead.
Despite numerous chances to tie the game and even take the lead, the Slayers were never able to put it together, missing multiple layups and shooting 31.3 percent from the field. The Slayers trailed for nearly the whole game, leading for less than a minute early in the game.
Even with Thompson’s 23 points, On Da Rise put together a balanced attack that saw three players finish in double figures. Jayrell Diggs was a standout for On Da Rise, finishing with an 18 point, 11 rebound double-double. Euan Brydie was another stud for On Da Rise, going 2-2 from three and finishing with 11 points.
On Da Rise got out to an early lead and never looked back, advancing to the second round to face Seattle Rotary at 3pm.
