Interview of Greg Stephan of the Iowa Barnstomers

Got a chance to catch up with Greg Stephan of Iowa Barnstormers.  Spent several years coaching High School basketball and from 2007-2009 was assistant coach at Upper Iowa University, but in 2009 returned to directing the Barnstomers. He the current Co director and 17U coach of the Barnstomers

 

1.When you started coaching your club what was your vision and why club basketball?

I saw an opportunity for kids in Iowa not getting the exposure that they could get because they were from small cities. The vision is to work hard and teach kids to play the right way and get in front of college coaches

 

2. Who are some of your best alumni?

Jarrod Uthoff, Iowa, Josh Oglesby Iowa, Seth Tuttle UNI,  Kaylen Williams Wisconsin Milwaukee, Aldon Smith,

 

3. Favorite win and against who?

We played 16U Mac Irvin Fire in a tournament. A Mac Irvin Fire player fired a punch a Barnstormer and everyone got into it from coaches to the players. Ended up winning the game by 20 points. Another victory that stands out is against Ray Allen Select last year in Milwaukee going into half down 17 and coming back to win the game

 

4. Players to watch on the team and x factor?

Wyatt Lohaus, Casey Schlatter, Kyle Haber. X factor in this group is Nick Jeffries when he gets it rolling the them is unbeatable makes them tough to guard.

5. What college coaches are getting in contact with you the most about your players?

Hear a lot from Missouri Valley Conference Drake Missouri State. Iowa always keeps tabs to check on how things are going. Big Ten teams like Wisconsin and Minnesota

 

6 Most difficult team you played during the spring?

Ray Allen Select really talented group very well coached and play together.
