The D.C. Blue Devil’s history dates back to the glory days of Kevin Durant and Ty Lawson wrecking shop in tournaments such as the Boo Williams Invitational and the Charlie Weber Tournament.
Today, the names of the tournaments may have changed but the level of talent remains. Last year’s squad dressed McDonald’s All American Markelle Fultz and a host of other division 1 caliber players including Jeff Dowtin, Nate Darling, and Kaylia Sykes just to name a few.
This year’s Blue Devil roster brings back only one player from last year’s group, Mohammad Kabir, who may be headed to prep school after the summer season. The remaining roster consists of a number of players who produced solid 2015 high school campaigns and who will get the opportunity to showcase their skills in the Under Armour Association in hopes of gaining exposure.
Big man Stefon Fisher (2017 IDEA) and sharp shooter Michael Speights (2017 Henry Wise) are just two of the high caliber additions that coaches Bryan Inge, Taiwan Grooms, and Pep Robinson have made to this year’s team.
The team is just two weeks away from their first local tournament and three before they travel to Brooklyn for the first Under Armour Association session. As expected, their first official practice consisted primarily of Coach Inge and his staff attempting to overcome the challenge of teaching an offense to players who, for the most part, have never played together. At times, you could see flashes of the team’s elite potential with players knocking down shots and moving the ball briskly on offense and other times where turnovers and poor shot selection prevailed.
Despite the need to shed early season rust, if was clear from listening to the coaches and watching the intensity in practice that the team has high expectations for this summer- a summer that will see them travel across the country and beyond to compete against the nation’s elite.
With an abundance of athletes and shooters on the wings, you can expect the Blue Devils to press frequently and play an even higher tempo than expected for summer basketball. Here is a look at their schedule for this summer.
