HS/ Club News & Notes
1. Even though Nike owns 95% of the basketball market, the swoosh brand continues to apply pressure on it’s competition. Nike announced that its top high school players would compete in Nassau, Bahamas, August 19-23, 2015 for elite training and competition. Was this not coincidental ? The dates of the event took a number of elite players away from the UA Elite 24 Game in Brooklyn last weekend.
2. 6-foot-10 2017, U-16 USA basketball anchor Wendell Carter Jr has just about every elite program in america vying for his services. Arizona, LSU, California and North Carolina are the latest high-major programs to offer.
3. Sacha Killeya-Jones 6-foot-10 power forward, Lynchburg (Va.) Virginia Episcopal School announced he has committed to Kentucky.
4. All-American sophmore F Marvin Bagley has decided to transfer to upstart prep school Hillcrest . Hillcrest (Phoenix) is partnered with StarShine Academy, a K-12 internationally accredited school.
5. Jamal Murray, the 6-foot-5 lead guard from Orangeville Prep (Ontario), has arguably been one of the most impressive guard’s on the world stage. the 18-year-old sensation is now in line to direct Kentucky to a national championship. Classes begin in Lexington on Aug. 26.
6. Prolific Prep (Napa) has secured full partnership with Justin-Siena HS. All Prolific players will attend the catholic HS in the heart of wine country .
7. Oakland Soldiers SF Carlos Johnson will make the move from El Cerrito to Findlay Prep. Look for Johnson to grow immensely playing for the nationally reputable program in the desert.
8. Terrance Ferguson 6-foot-7, SG-SF out of Oklahoma City committed to Avery Johnson and Alabama. Ferguson also considered Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, and North Carolina.
9. Mohamed Bamba , 6-foot-11 2017 of Westtown (Pa.) School & PSA Cardinals has been a serious Stock Riser, this summer. Bamba recently received coveted offers from Duke and Kentucky.
10. Our Savior New America PF Cheick Diallo remains uncleared by the NCAA to participate. Diallo is expected to be a key contributor for the Kansas Jayhalks and Bill Self.
11. Jarred Vanderbilt, 6-foot-8 2017 small forward from Bellaire (TX) Victory Prep. Vanderbilt might be the most diverse talent in the country in 2017. The Victory Prep SF won a gold medal with the USA U16 team earlier this summer, was in the alpha dog role with the likes of Wendell Carter Jr. and Gary Trent Jr.
12. Per Jarrell Strong of Indi Hoops 2017 6-10 F Brandon McCoy transferred from Morse to Cathedral Catholic. McCoy who just started playing basketball at 14 looks to expand his grasp of the game, solidify himself among highly regarded players.
13. 6-foot-10 five-star recruit out of Wesleyan Christian in North Carolina Harry Giles, is transferring to Oak Hill. Expect Giles and the squad to attack a national schedule as well as compete for national championship.
14. LaMelo Ball (2019) combo guard from Chino Hiills committed to UCLA before his first freshman HS contest. He will team with his brothers, Lonzo and LiAngelo to form one of the top back courts in the nation this upcoming season. Expect Chino Hills to rival Mater Dei, Sierra Canyon, Bishop Montgomery and Corona-Centennial for supremacy in California.
15. 5 Star 2016 SF TJ Leaf of Foothill Christian decommitted from Sean Miller and Arizona.
16. 6-8 SG Vance Jackson of St. John Bosco will transfer to Prolific Prep (Napa). Teaming with Josh Jackson will create a nice 1-2 punch for Prolific, who will take on an on imposing national schedule this season.
17. Australian 7-footer Isaac Humphries has reclassified and enrolled at Kentucky for the 2015-16 season.
18. 6-10 forward Wenyen Gabriel of Wilbraham & Monson (MA) & Mass Rivials has risen from obscurity to one of the most coveted prospects of 2016. It seems to be Gabriel’s motor and relentless style competing on every possession. UNC, Duke, Kansas and Kentucky have offered.
