2013-14 HS news & story lines

1. Stanley Johnson and Mater Dei held serve vs Jahil Okafor and Whitney Young (Chi) in an epic battle at Nike Extravaganza. The win keeps Johnson and the Monarchs at the # 1 spot in most national polls.

2. Rainier Beach and Stanley Johnson's former Mater Dei & Oakland Soldiers teammate, Shaqquan Aaron are in hot persuit  of the Monarchs. Aaron, a Louisville commit is leading his team to one of the best years in school history. Wonder who would win a contest between consensus Top 5 nationally ranked, Mater Dei vs. Rainier Beach ?

3. Loyola Big Fella, Thomas Welch was selected for the McDonalds All American game. Parker Jackson-Cartwright and Welch were the only players on the west coast to be nominated from the same team. This could explain the Cubs lofty ranking among most national polls.

4. 2016 Elite PG Jayson Tatum (Chaminade College Prep HS, MO) was offered by Duke. Tatum has the size and skill rare in HS basketball, expect his skills to translate immensely at the next level.

5. St. John's HS (DC) is sporting an 18-1 record, in arguably the best conference in HS basketball (WCAC). Taking down perennial powers; DeMatha, Paul VI and Gonzaga in consecutive games has thrust St. Johns into national polls.

6. Rashad Vaughn of Findlay Prep is set to announce his college decision on Saturday. Vaughn is deciding between Iowa St, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, UNLV. Indi Hoops, Jarrell Strong reports Vaughn may be leaning toward Ames, Iowa (ISU) and Fred Hoiberg.

7. Word on the street,  a number of highly ranked players on the West Coast in 2015 are looking to move club teams after the HS season. Stay tuned.
