Portland Columbia Christian’s Kameron Chatman has taken four official visits and is expected to be making a decision soon. The smooth 6’7” lefty guard impressed college scouts from all over the country and played some of his best basketball when the lights were shining the brightest. On the EYBL circuit he averaged 15.8 ppg and a team leading 9.8 rpg.
Chatman’s final 4 includes Michigan, Oregon, USC, and Arizona. Kameron’s father Canaan Chatman took some time to break down his son’s recruiting process.
Most recently, he took a visit to Tucson to visit Sean Miller and the University of Arizona. Portland native and University of Arizona assistant coach Damon Stoudamire has been a big part of the recruitment process. Arizona has a history of recruiting top Portland talent Salim Stoudamire and Chris Rodgers playing there.
Kameron’s first visit was to Ann Arbor and took in a football game at “The Big House”. Canaan went on to say, “He also likes coach Beilein and his blue collar approach. He makes you earn everything you get. The chance to play in such a tough league, on a great college campus, at a great academic institution is a hard sell.”
University of Oregon is in the race as well and a school Kameron has grown very familiar with. Oregon transfer Mike Moser was a host on the visit and he watched Oregon take on Tennesse at Autzen. “Oregon has a lot to offer, from uniforms, facilities, amenities, and academics. Also, coach Altman can definitely coach, there is no doubt about that.”
After spending last season at Long Beach Poly, Chatman has quickly built a relationship with the new staff at USC. “We absolutely love their staff, they are very personable and made us feel very comfortable.”
After taking all 4 visits Kameron’s father Canaan talked about the things that would be the most important in making a final decision.
“The main thing will be the coaching staff and how comfortable he is with them,” Canaan said. “Next will be how much he can improve as a player, followed by academics and the degree he will receive.”
“It’s really going to come down to the coaching staff – his relationship with them – and who is going to get him better. Nothing is going to be guarantees anywhere, we already know that, he’s going to have to come in and work for whatever he gets.”
When asked how quickly Kameron Chatman could potentially make a decision Canaan responded, “I think he wants to go ahead and get this thing over with. Michigan comes in on Tuesday and Arizona has already been in. I think he will make a decision sometime this week, most likely on Wednesday or Thursday. He is ready to do it!”
