MISSION:
The Northern Virginia Cavaliers (NOVA Cavs) Basketball Program has been playing competitive AAU basketball since the team's inaugrual season in 2005. The Cavaliers compete locally in AAU, YBOA, USBA sanctioned events and are members of AAU's Potomac Valley District. Our season runs from March through July. GOALS: 1. Player Development 2. Team Chemistry and Cohesiveness 3. Improvement 4. Learning Experiences Player Development: It is important to us as an organization that the players on our team be prepared for the next level. We value the fundamental aspects of the game and try to develop those skills necessary for our players to succeed at the High School level. Practice time is very valuable because that is where players improve their game skills. Our coaching philosophy is to spend more time teaching basketball skills than running plays in practice. Practice will be mandatory unless an absence has been pre-arranged with the coaching staff. Team Chemistry and Cohesiveness: Team chemistry and cohesiveness is underrated in most team sports. Last season we viewed our team's chemistry and cohesiveness as one of our major strengths. In a team sport, not everyone is going to get the playing time they want; but it is important that everyone understands their role in order for the team to be successful. Being a good teammate is just as important as becoming a better basketball player. We need players who are unselfish and willing to sacrifice their personal goals for the greater good of the team. Improvement: Another valued goal is improvement, for both player and team. Our players will be expected to understand their roles on the team and will be pushed to compete hard in practice to earn playing time. Consistent improvement for both player and team is more important than wins and losses. Learning Experiences: Most young players will never reach the NBA or even Division 1 college basketball. Therefore, doing well in school will be monitored closely. The experiences our players learn through basketball, such as hard work, achieving goals and working with others will be valuable to them as adults. The fun they have and the relationships they form will be remembered for a lifetime.
